The Cranes of Hokkaido

Just back from a week trip in Japan…

I had a fantastic week earlier this month in Hokkaido with three Singaporean and one Japanese photographers shooting Red Crowned Cranes (also call Japanese Cranes) and Whooper Swans amongst others.

The trip was great from a photographic point of view, with techniques learned while sharing with others and also from breathtaking sceneries and subjects, and from a human point of view as I’m happy to have made new friends and to be sure I hope we’ll travel again together.

The trip was also the occasion to push certain limits, to know how far I would accept to go to make the shoot, of course without compromising on the animal wellbeing! I discovered that I’d go further than I would have thought: getting up in the middle of the night, literally freezing outside with my camera, lying down and crawling on snow and ice to get the right angle…

Now it’s the time to post process the images I brought back: about 25’000 shoots in 9 days, a personal record (not that quantity is necessary good, but let’s face it: there is something highly satisfying with the 10fps of the Canon EOS 7D Mark II…). So do expect to see more in the next days and weeks…
